Recent advances by Russian forces have forced the Ukrainian army to retreat from a series of tactical positions along the western front line of Avdiivka, although these withdrawals have not contributed to Russia achieving military victories.

Analysts believe that Russian forces are unlikely to achieve deeper and operationally meaningful penetration in the region in the near future.

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Alexander Syrsky reported on April 28 that Ukrainian troops had withdrawn from Berdychi (northwest of Avdiivka) and Semenovka (west of Avdiivka) to positions further west to preserve their integrity.

The report notes: `Russian forces will likely continue to gain tactical advantages in the direction of Avdiivka in the coming weeks, and Ukrainian commanders may decide to continue further retreats if Russian forces threaten them.`

A complete withdrawal to fortified positions west of Avdiivka would likely allow Russian forces to advance relatively quickly through the fields if Kiev forces do not attempt to hold positions in these fields, experts say.

General Syrsky added that to stabilize the situation in the direction of Avdiivka, the Ukrainian army is redeploying the rest and recovery brigades.

The arrival of restored Ukrainian reinforcements will likely allow the Self-Defense Forces to slow Russia’s tactical advances and help stabilize the front.

Ukraine’s military is facing resource constraints, with a reported manpower shortage of one-third in northwest Avdiivka, but they remain at a standstill, leaving Russian divisional forces unable to

The arrival of Ukrainian reinforcements and additional equipment will force the Russian command to admit that deeper and wider penetration of the front is unlikely in the near future, or they must transfer more

Russian forces are in a position to make significant operational gains near Chasov Yar and are preparing reserves to support a large-scale offensive expected this summer.

Further stabilization of Russian positions northwest of Avdiivka left the Russian command with a choice: continue west toward the major target of Pokrovsk or attempt north to conduct further operations.

Ukrainian officials had previously identified Pokrovsk as the target of Russian operations in the Avdiivka direction, and Mr. Syrsky confirmed this assessment on April 28.

Moscow forces may also decide to move north in their tactical penetration of the Ocheretino region along the N-20 (Donetsk – Konstantinovka) highway to put pressure on defending Kiev forces

The Russian army has long aimed to capture the four major cities that form the ring of fortresses in the Donetsk region (Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkovka as well as Konstantinovka), and Chasov Yar was of significant importance as it would provide

General Syrsky also noted that the threat of a possible future Russian attack on Kharkov is forcing Ukraine to actively add forces to increase its ability to defend the city, although ISW continues to
