In a video about the meeting with former US President Donald Trump that took place on March 8 at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, Hungarian Prime Minister Orban praised the former owner of the White House.
The Hungarian leader said that when in power from 2017 to 2021, Mr. Trump was `the president of peace, he was respected by the whole world and therefore created conditions for peace.`
He said: `In the past, when Mr. Trump was in office, there was no conflict in Ukraine or the Middle East. Now, if he is president, conflicts will no longer exist.`
Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out, Hungary has continuously called for a diplomatic solution to resolve the war.
The meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Orban took place when the US presidential election was heating up.
It is worth mentioning that the meeting took place when Mr. Orban has not had any direct meeting with US President Joe Biden since Mr. Biden took office.
Europe plans to increase defense spending in the scenario of Mr. Trump’s re-election
European countries are considering plans to increase defense spending in the scenario of former US President Donald Trump being re-elected, causing Washington to become less involved in NATO activities, diplomatic sources said.
Daily Telegraph on March 9 quoted European diplomats as saying that NATO could face the risk of the US withdrawing from the alliance if Mr. Trump is re-elected next November.
Therefore, NATO needs to make strategic plans to cope with the consequences and review the bloc’s defense strategy.
`The possibility of the US withdrawing from NATO is worrying. No one knows what he (Trump) will do next,` a European diplomat shared.
Mr. Trump is currently a bright presidential candidate of the US Republican Party.
Previously, some former senior US officials warned that the US would withdraw from NATO if Mr. Trump returned to the White House.
Mr. Trump himself criticized NATO during his election campaigns and said that Washington was shouldering security costs on behalf of other members of the bloc.
Therefore, according to diplomats, one of Europe’s plans is to increase defense spending in the near future.
