In an interview with TV channel 24TV, President Erdogan said he had contacted President Putin to discuss the possibility that the two countries could cooperate in producing the S-500 air defense complex.
Türkiye and Russia approved the sale of S-400 Triumph complexes last year.
Previously, Anadolu news website on June 11 quoted Mr. Erdogan as saying that Russia had provided Ankara with quite good loan terms so that Türkiye could buy the S-400 system.
Türkiye’s determination to buy the S-400 has faced opposition from its US allies.
The S-400 `Fire Dragon` is considered the most advanced defense system, able to destroy all objects appearing in the air within a range of over 400 km, including aircraft and cruise missiles.
In February, Kommersant daily newspaper quoted Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin as saying that the Almaz-Antey arms group had begun producing the S-500 air defense system on self-propelled chassis and trailers at its factory in
It is expected that the S-500 will replace the `fire dragon` S-400 Triumf in the future.
The S-500 Prometey, also known as 55R6M Triumfator-M, is an anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic missile system that is said to have a range of up to 600km and can simultaneously intercept up to 10 ballistic and missile missiles.
According to National Interest, the S-500 will be a direct opponent of the US-made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and will even work more effectively against stealth aircraft targets than THAAD.
