Hollywood’s Live-Action movies based on Japanese Anime/Manga have had a `bad reputation` for many years.
So what is the reason why Japanese Live-Action movies are still popular, but audiences are not satisfied with Hollywood products?
Restriction
Adapting Anime/Manga into a movie is no small challenge.
For example, in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the filmmaker must thoroughly explain the plot, characters, and setting, so that viewers who do not know this Anime can enjoy it.
Another limitation for film adaptations is the characters’ expressions.
In reality, a Live-Action movie actor would not be able to simulate these expressions exactly.
Budget and CGI
One of the biggest problems with film adaptations is the budget for special effects.
Harmful misunderstandings
Sometimes, even directors and writers don’t know what makes the original Anime/Manga series successful.
Netflix’s Death Note is an example of a rewrite of an original story.
Meanwhile, `Light` in this series uses the book to approach a girl.
`Color` the character
No one can ignore the fact that film adaptations often `color` the characters.
In 2017, Ghost in Shell chose Scarlett Johansson for an Asian role.
Or in Death Note, L was `dyed black` so that no one recognized this character anymore.
This doesn’t just happen with Anime with Asian characters.
There is still hope
Although most Hollywood Anime/Manga adaptations fail, there are still movies worth watching.
After Death Note, Netflix also plans to adapt a few popular anime like Bleach.
